The most widely accepted explanation for the name Bhutan derives from the Sanskrit term Bhot-Ant, meaning “the end of Tibet.” Today, the kingdom is known to its people as Druk Yul, “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” a fitting title for a nation that remained largely isolated from the outside world for much of its long and fascinating history.

History
Early British explorers referred to the country as Bootan, while ancient Buddhist writers called it Lho Mon, meaning ‘Paradise of the South’. Locally, Bhutan has always been known as Druk Yul, the Land of the Thunder Dragon. Archeological evidence and early Buddhist texts trace Bhutan’s origins to around 500–600 A.D., with its historical narrative strongly influenced by its mountainous, landlocked geography.
Bhutan’s recorded history begins with the arrival of Guru Padmasambhava from Tibet in 747 A.D., an event that firmly rooted Buddhism in the region and shaped its cultural and political evolution. Although the country was not unified until the 17th century, it appears to have existed as an independent entity since at least the 7th century.
In the 1600s, Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal unified Bhutan and established a dual system of governance under the Drukpa school of Mahayana Buddhism. After his era, Bhutan experienced prolonged internal conflict as regional governors, or Penlops, vied for power—most notably the rival clans of Tongsa and Paro.
By the late 19th century, the Tongsa Penlop Sir Ugyen Wangchuk defeated the Paro faction and was unanimously elected the first King of Bhutan, marking the beginning of the hereditary monarchy. Honored by the British as a Knight Commander of the Empire for his diplomatic skill, he laid the foundation for a strong central government. His successors have continued to guide Bhutan through a period of stability and gradual modernization.
Geography
Bhutan lies in the eastern Himalayas between China and India, covering about 47,000 sq. km. Its landscape ranges from southern subtropical foothills to high alpine peaks in the north, creating diverse climatic zones. The population of about 700,000 comprises three main groups—Ngalops, Sharchops, and Lhotshampas—collectively known as Drukpas, who speak Dzongkha.

Governance is decentralized, with citizens participating actively in development decisions. The National Assembly formulates policies, reviewed by the National Council and approved by the King. The judiciary consists of village-level courts, district judges, the High Court, and the Supreme Court, with the King retaining the power of pardon.
